The who has been given many accolades such as, "Oseadee Yo," Nana Yaw Osafo Maafo has sounded a note of caution to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates that the December 22 delegates' congress to elect the party's flag bearer for the 2008 elections should be conducted in a courteous manner.
According to the one time Minister of Finance and Economic Planning and Minister of Education and Sports, the party is at a crossroads and that their ability to retain power will depend largely on the kind of choices they will make at the congress.
"We are at a crossroads, and let us not forget that we are going into the December congress bearing in mind that we are going to promote, protect and preserve the party," and called on the delegates to be mindful that the unity of the NPP is paramount and that he Osafo represents that unity.
He told The Heritage in an interview after last Sunday's massive rally by the NPP at Kasoa, in the Central Region, that what President Kufuor has been able to achieve within the seven year period of his administration must not be handed over to people who will only come and loot the country's coffers.
He said the job of the Chief Executive of the country is a huge one and therefore requires someone who has a proven record of an achiever to lead the nation, warning that, should they make the mistake of choosing the wrong candidate the party would be in danger.
According to the man whose message captured the hearts of the gathering last Sunday, a research he conducted over three months showed that among the five administrations that has ruled the country, President Kufuor's administration surpasses them all. Under Kwame Nkrumah’s Convention People's Party, he said there was no freedom of speech, adding that it is only in this present administration that Ghanaians are enjoying absolute freedom of expression and private ownership.
This, he said, is one of the major reasons for the party to hand over power to itself to continue the good work it is pursuing.
"We are going to account to Ghanaians what we have been able to achieve within the past seven years and it is upon that that they will continue to vote for us to continue the good work," he stressed.
He said he has the track record of being a competent engineer, banker and cabinet minister and so entreated the delegates to elect him as the NPP presidential candidate and eventually the President of the Republic of Ghana to enable him to continue his good work.
The man who introduced and implemented the implementation and manage the country through the HIPC process with his known management skills and took Ghana out in a record time said his interaction with the delegates and the rank and file of the party had given him the assurances that he would win the this month's poll.
He promised to serve whoever emerges winner at the congress "like a toddler" should he fail to achieve his aim of becoming the President of Ghana".
