The New Patriotic Party has waded into the NHIS capitation pilot controversy in the Ashanti Region, with an endorsement of calls for a suspension of the scheme.
Party executives have warned they will mobilize people to join civil groups to demonstrate in protest.
The say the continued implementation of the scheme has serious consequences on health delivery in the region following a boycott by private health providers.
The NPP particularly wants the National Health Insurance Authority to convince the public on why and how it decided to use Ashanti Region for the pilot.
Regional Secretary, Samuel Pyne, accuses the NDC government of politicizing the scheme by using party officials to speak for scheme instead of leaving it to NHIA officials.
“If you’re making a piloting project do you take 30 percent of the total of the scheme instead of taking maybe 2 percent so that when there is a challenge you can easily address it like what we have been confronted with now? Secondly, on what basis should national executives of the ruling NDC come to the region to do advocacy for the health insurance authorities instead of the mandated functional officers of the scheme who are supposed to do that?” he questioned.
The piloting of the National Insurance Scheme Capitation has been condemned by many stakeholders and health experts since its introduction in January this year.
