A founding member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamekloe, has criticised the party’s leadership, accusing it of losing touch with its grassroots supporters.
He made comments on JoyNews' The Pulse, following recent comments by the former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, who believed that the party has become “fake” and questioned its internal democratic credentials.
Dr Nyaho-Tamekloe argued that the leadership appears to believe a top-to-bottom approach is the most effective way to run the party, a stance he described as misguided.
He maintained that political parties are built from the grassroots up, and not the other way around.
According to him, instead of prioritising efforts to mobilise and reconnect with grassroots members, the current NPP leadership has chosen to sideline them.
"They have no contact with the grassroots. Political parties are built from the grassroots; that is, where we have various platforms before you get to the top. And this is what we should have done immediately after the election, and they chose to pick it from the top, thinking that if they pick a leader from the top, who will probably have sympathy with...."
He also said a significant number of party members share the views expressed by former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, regarding the current state of the party.
