New Patriotic Party (NPP)Member of Parliament for Nsawam/Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh has called on the police to as a matter of urgency provide a 24–hour security for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the key witness for the petitioners in the ongoing Presidential Election Petition.He said the safety of Dr. Bawumia is of topmost priority to the NPP after the near fatal accident which almost claimed his life two months ago.Dr Bawumia was involved in a serious accident on the Bole road when the back tires of the car in which he was travelling in burst. He sustained minor injuries after the vehicle somersaulted several times.But the NPP suspected foul play and blamed the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of plotting to assassinate Bawumia due his instrumental role in the court case.In the same vein, Frank Annoh-Dompreh on Peace FM Thursday said his instinct tells him the life of their key witness is under serious threat.According to him, the mountain of "evidence" presented in court by Dr. Bawumia has angered some "power drunk individuals" in government and alleged they are bent on using fair or foul means to clinch to power.The Nsawam/Adoagyiri MP warned that if the safety of Bawumia is taken for granted, the NPP’s case will be gravely affected.He said Ghana is at the crossroad as many people are anxious to know the outcome of the case. He therefore alleged that the respondents will not hesitate to employ all the arsenals at their disposal to wipe out their opponents.Annoh-Dompreh said Dr. Bawumia’s role in the case should not be taken for granted his evidence could affect the presidency of the nation.On his part, Greater Accra Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Freeman Tettey said the police cannot act on the appeal made by the NPP MP unless Dr. Bawumia writes formally to the Inspector General of Police (IGP).He explained that the police cannot offer 24-hour protection to an individual without a directive from the IGP.DSP Freeman Tettey said the police is ready to provide security for anyone who believes his or her life is in danger if the IGP grants that request.
