A Deputy Information Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has adviced the leadership of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to seek the assistance of their past executives, drawing their experiences in running the affairs of the party.
According to him, the current executives are confused and are by their statements eroding too much confidence in themselves.
He cited some utterances by General Secretary Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie as being “most unimpressive”.
Mr Afriyie announced Thursday a set of rules banning all MPs and party officials at all levels from openly campaigning for any flag-bearer aspirant.
The directive, expected to ensure ethical behavior in the party, has not gone down well with some MPs in the NPP.
They are challenging the authenticity of the law, doubting the party’s law making bodies decided on it.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana programme Friday, the deputy minister contended that the directive has rather come late since the contest for the flagbearer position has already begun, adding, “when FIFA is starting a tournament…they do not come in the middle, 20 or 30 minutes into the match to now tell the players the rules”.
He noted that taking such decisions will not augur well for the party, making things “look like some kindergarten affair”.
However, Okaikoi South MP Nana Akomea, who was a co-panelist on the programme, thought these mistakes on the part of the new executives are normal considering that they have been in office for just a short period and at a time when there is a wave of excitement in the party to recapture power.
He was confident that with time, the executives would stabilize.
