The hope of Mr. Richard Akuoko Adiyiah to represent the Ahafo Ano North constituency in Parliament, on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is hanging in a balance.
Mr. Adiyiah, NPP Parliamentary candidate for the constituency is not a registered voter, and that he was thus not qualified to contest the primaries.
He contested the primaries with four others and emerged the winner.
Mr. Samuel Yorke Aidoo, Director of the Human Resource and General Services of the Electoral Commission says the EC has no particulars of a registered voter, in the person of Richard Akuoko Adiyiah.
The Commission in a letter dated July 18, 2008, says “there is no registered voter in the Ahafo-Ano North Constituency in the Ashanti Region of Ghana with the particulars referred to”.
This was in response to inquires by the incumbent MP, Mr. Kwame Owusu Frimpong in June this year on the subject.
With this revelation by the EC, an NPP activist Mr. Emmanuel Owusu Nsiah has called for the annulment of the primary and the disqualification of Mr. Adiyiah as the NPP Parliamentary candidate for the area.
In a petition, Mr. Owusu Nsiah said he took inspiration from PNDC Law 284, Representation of the People Law, section 9 (1A.), which states that a Parliamentary Candidate must be a registered voter.
