The Abuakwa South Constituency, under the leadership of Member of Parliament Dr Kingsley Agyemang, has been widely applauded for orchestrating one of the most effective grassroots campaigns in the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primaries. The well-coordinated strategy helped the area deliver the highest vote margin for Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the Eastern Region.
National results show that Dr Bawumia polled 110,645 votes nationwide, representing 56.48 per cent of the total valid votes cast, emerging as the clear winner of the NPP presidential primaries held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
In the Eastern Region, however, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia led the primaries with 10,487 votes, followed by Bryan Acheampong with 5,918 votes, Kennedy Agyapong with 3,867 votes, Adutwum with 76 votes, and Kwabena with 22 votes, highlighting Abuakwa South’s decisive role in the region.
Speaking to JoyNews, Dr Agyemang said the outcome in Abuakwa South was no accident but the result of sustained engagement with delegates and a disciplined, well-organised campaign.
“I strongly believe in the potentials of Dr Bawumia to lead not only the NPP but Ghana as a whole. That conviction pushed me to campaign strongly for him, and it has resulted in this high feat for Abuakwa South,” he said.
Dr Agyemang noted that the victory reflected delegates’ confidence in Dr Bawumia’s vision and leadership, particularly on critical issues such as economic management and digital transformation, which resonated strongly with grassroots supporters.
He also appealed for unity within the party, calling on supporters of the other four aspirants to rally behind the flagbearer as preparations begin for the 2026 general elections.
“I want to appeal to supporters of the other four aspirants to fully come on board. It is time for us to work together as one party to ensure that the NPP returns to power in 2026 and continues the good works started under former President Nana Akufo-Addo,” Dr Agyemang said.
Dr Bawumia’s national victory reflected broad support across multiple regions, including strong showings in Bono East, where he secured around 69 per cent of the vote in that region’s primaries.
Supporters in Abuakwa South and beyond say the results underscore confidence in Dr Bawumia’s leadership and highlight the effectiveness of local mobilisation efforts. Within party circles, the constituency is now being cited as a model of strong organisation and grassroots enthusiasm as the NPP turns its focus to the 2026 polls.
Dr Agyemang has, however, pledged to intensify his campaign for the flagbearer in Abuakwa South now that the party has formally endorsed Dr Bawumia to lead the NPP into the 2028 general election.
“I will continue to campaign relentlessly. This time, I plan to build an even more formidable campaign team here in Abuakwa South to increase not only the parliamentary vote in 2028, but also boost the presidential vote astronomically,” he said.
He added: “I believe that if all constituencies across the country work with the same resolve, the NPP can reclaim power from the NDC with relative ease.”
All four aspirants who contested Dr Bawumia have thrown their support behind him, pledging to work assiduously in unison to help the party reclaim power from the ruling National Democratic Congress.
