Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has urged New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates to prioritise competence over religious affiliation when choosing a candidate for the 2024 elections.
Dr. Prempeh emphasized that the primary criterion for selection should be the individual's capacity to bring prosperity to the people.
Addressing gatherings of artisans and delegates from the Manhyia South constituency NPP on Friday, October 27, 2023, Dr. Prempeh highlighted Ghana's history of peaceful coexistence among various religious groups.
He cautioned against exploiting religious sentiments in both internal party and national elections, stressing the importance of unity over division.
Dr. Prempeh shared his personal background, revealing that he was named after a Muslim and that the Regional Chief Imam of the Ashanti Region is his brother.
The Minister underlined that such diverse religious affiliations are common in many families and should not be a basis for division.
The lawmaker encouraged NPP members to take pride in the government's achievements over the past seven years and actively advocate for the party's platform. Despite the global challenges, he asserted that the government's record reflects commendable performance.
Dr Prempeh asserted that the NPP has demonstrated superior economic management compared to the John Mahama-led NDC. He expressed confidence in the NPP's prospects for success in the December 2024 elections.
In closing, Dr Prempeh urged Manhyia South delegates to exercise their democratic rights peacefully on November 4, 2023, emphasizing the critical role of party unity in securing a decisive NPP victory in 2024.
