The Ashanti regional chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Mr F F Anto has constituted a committee to investigation Chronicle newspaper publication alleging that some constituency chairmen of the party in the Ashanti Region joined Nana Akuffo Addo on a campaign trail.
It was reported in Tuesday’s edition of the Chronicle newspaper that, the 2008 presidential candidate of the party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo at the weekend travelled with some of the constituency chairmen of the party to campaign at Kumawu contrary to the party's constitution.
The paper named the chairmen as Mr Henry Kokofu, Bantama Constituency Chairman, Kwasi Owusu Kodua, Nsuta-Kwamang Constituency Chairman, and one Atta of the Bekwai Constituency.
This allegation has been denied by one of the accused, the Bantama chairman, MR Henry Kokofu. Speaking to Citi News on Tuesday, Mr Henry said he will be the last person to flout the party's constitution and an order from the regional chairman.
“I did not. If there was any campaign trail at all, I was not part of it and I don’t know if there was any campaign trail. I haven’t travelled beyond Kumasi for a week or two. As we all know it is not within our constitutional obligation to either stop somebody or someone else from following any of the flag bearer aspirants,” he said.
“But then, for sanity to prevail and then to make sure that constituency executives of which I am one (party officers) do not compromise our positions so far as contestants are concerned. There is the need to stay neutral to some extent...I will be the last person to flout that directive from my boss (Regional Chairman),” he added.
The Regional Chairman, F F Anto also told Citi News that he hasn't spoken to any of the Constituency Chairmen yet but he has set up a committee to investigate the allegations.
“I haven’t spoken to any one of them whose name has been mentioned but I am doing my personal investigation. I am told the meeting was held at Kumawu. I have talked to the Kumawu Chairman Chairman, Mr Darko this morning. I have had another discussion with the first Vice National Chairman. I have talked to the Afigya Sekyere Chairman and I think Nana Addo went there purposely to console the former Chairman who lost the mother,” he disclosed.
“So he went there to console him but that notwithstanding, since it has been reported in the papers, I have set up a committee to do an investigation for me...Since this issue is dear to my heart, I have set up a committee to invite those whose names have been mentioned,” he added.
He said those mentioned will appear before the committee whose members include; Rev Owusu Green and Dr Nsia Asare and they will start investigations on Monday to see if there is any merit in Chronicle’s story.
