The following is a statement issued by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) condemning the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for allegedly portraying Akans as violent in nature.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has noted with great shock and disbelief the continuous attempt by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to portray the Akans as violent in nature.
On a radio discussion programme recently, the National Chairman of the NPP, Mr. Jake Okanta Obestebi Lamptey confidently stated that the violence that erupted in Cote d’Ivoire was championed by the dominant Akan speaking people who were fighting for their convictions, and what happened in Cote d’Ivoire could happen in Ghana since the Akans in Ghana who are in the majority are likely to adopt the same strategies if they feel dissatisfied with processes leading to the 2012 general polls.
Those unfortunate and war mongering comments by the NPP National Chairman was again corroborated by Abu Jinapor a member of the NPP’s communication team. We find these tagging of the Akan speaking people not only as false but also a subtle ethnocentric ploy to prepare the minds of Ghanaians for the violence the NPP intends to unleash on the peace of the nation in view of the growing reality that they would lose the 2012 elections.
The Akan people are generally loving and peaceful people just like other ethnic groups in this country and would not allow themselves to be lured into any chaotic situation intended to derail the clock of progress and to satisfy the selfish and inward looking political agenda of any group of self seeking people in this country.
Signed
Richard Quashigah
National Propaganda Secretary of NDC
