The New Patriotic Party will seek to garner as much as 80 percent of popular votes from the Ashanti Region during the 2012 general elections to boost its chances of winning the presidential election.
The Ashanti regional chairman of the opposition NPP, Mr F.F. Anto, who stated the ambitious projection on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sεn programme on Thursday, said the President John Evans Atta-Mills-led National Democratic Congress government has proven itself unequal to the task of building a better nation and that is the message the party is carrying to voters.
The party chairman and official spokesperson of the party in the region, who was responding to claims that some NPP members were behind the recent distribution of posters of former first lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings proposing her to contest the flagbearership of the NDC, said far from pursuing whoever was to lead the NDC, the NPP in the region was focused on winning massively come the elections in 2012.
He said for instance that inflation was more manageable under former president J.A. Kufuor’s government, unlike at present where traders are unable to make profit.
F.F. Anto said there is an elaborate programme to drum home throughout the Ashanti Region, failings of the Mills administration, criticizing also recent increases in the producer price of cocoa, claiming the increases were made in off-season and would therefore not benefit cocoa farmers for whom the upwards price reviews were intended to motivate.
He would not waste his time to explain a claim by Gideon Boako, the NPP’s regional youth organizer, that certain NPP elements were involved in the formation of a movement in the region among whose motives was the rallying of support for a Nana Konadu candidacy of the NDC flagbearer race.
Boako made the claim about two months ago, according to programme host Kwabena Bobie Ansah, long before the controversial Konadu posters went on distribution in parts of the country, and following which two persons alleged to be NPP members were arrested at Abetifi in the Eastern Region for alleged possession of some of the posters. But according to F.F. Anto, he was not aware of any NPP members in the region canvassing any alliance or support for Nana Konadu, and that the party was rather focused on its 2012 ambition.
The District Chief Executive for Abetifi, Samuel Asamoah narrated how two members of the NPP were arrested for possessing some of the Konadu posters. Listen to Samuel Asamoah.
However, in a rebuttal the NPP’s Eastern Regional Secretary, Prince Aboagye denied that those arrested were NPP members and also gave a different account of the posters episode. Listen to Prince Aboagye.
