The New Patriotic Party has scheduled two separate congresses for this year as part of efforts to prepare the grounds for the annexing of political power in the year 2012.The first one would be in June this year where it would hold a Special National Conference to take a decision on proposed amendments to the party’s National Constitution.Since April 28, top executives of the party have been meeting in Accra to re-examine the proposals and to fine-tune them ahead of the Conference.Key among the proposals being considered is the thorny issue of putting a ceiling on the number of people who can run for the flag bearer ship position of the party at every congress.There is also a proposal to tremendously expand the party’s Electoral College to give every card-baring member the power to vote during every congress to elect a flag bearer for the party.Speaking to Citi News, National Chairman of the NPP, Mr. Peter Mac Manu said the National Council of the party would meet in Accra on April 29 to consider issues relating to the various proposed amendments, ahead of the July Conference, which will precede the 2009 National Delegates Congress.He noted that though he did not want to preempt the input of the meeting, whatever decisions were made will inform the repackaging of the documented amendments which will be sent to all branches of the party worldwide.Mr. Mac Manu remarked that this action was to be taken a month ahead of the National Congress as per the provisions of the party’s current constitution.He however noted that two congresses were to be held this year.“One is a special one or an emergency to amend or add on to the constitution and the final one, will be in December where national officers will be elected”.By: citifmonline.com
