Ghanaians will soon have the benefit of reading at first hand a comprehensive compilation of documents, articles and pictures describing at firsthand the issues leading to and surrounding the Presidential Election Petition sanctioned by the National Executive Committee of the New Patriotic Party with Nana Akufo-Addo, Dr. Bawumia and Jake Obetsebi Lamptey as the Petitioners. This has been made possible in a 200 page book authored by Ken Ofori-Atta, William Oppong Bio, Boakye Agyarko and Kwasi Busia.The book titled “The Election Petition: Restoring Justice and Democracy for Peace” will be launched on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at 6pm at the British Council in Accra. According to authors of the publication, the book seeks to inform the Ghanaian public, the international community and all stakeholders of the allegations of constitutional and statutory violations, irregularities and malpractices that affected the conduct and outcome of the 2012 elections. The book, consisting of 11 Chapters, provides profiles of the petitioners, the nine empanelled justices of the Supreme Court, and profiles of the legal teams of the petitioners and the respondents. A Chapter of the publication is also dedicated to providing readers with the evidence of malpractices, statutory violations and irregularities as presented by the 2nd petitioner, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, whilst in the witness box. The courage shown by the petitioners in challenging the results of the 2012 Presidential election in the Supreme Court, rather than on the streets is applauded by authors of the book. The active engagement of the respondents in the case, as well as the Supreme Court, establishing that justice can be obtained in the courts and not on the streets is duly celebrated in the book. This landmark publication explains that the survival, nurturing and maturation of democracy in Ghana will depend on the collective will of Ghanaians to seeing to it that the sovereign will of the electorate at every election is religiously respected, adding that the declaration of election results must truly and absolutely reflect the choice made by citizens.“Election Petition: Restoring Justice and Democracy for Peace” is of the belief that Ghana’s electoral process and the Electoral Commission will see significant changes and that it will eventually evolve to be amongst the finest in the world in the aftermath of the Presidential Election Petition.
