The New Patriotic Party has advised the Electoral Commission to take a more critical look at improving security on Election Day.
The party is not impressed with the security arrangements in the December 2008 elections which tumbled it out of government.
General Secretary, Nana Ohene Ntow, in an interview with Joy FM’s Super Morning Show host Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, cited instances where ballot boxes were snatched in the full glare of the police and others assigned to provide security, saying such acts questioned the credibility of the election results.
His comments come in the wake of a three-day Inter Party Advisory Committee meeting with the Electoral Commission on going at Akosombo.
The meeting is to address teething challenges the commission faced during the just ended elections and ways to improve future elections.
Ohene Ntow said the party has suggested an inter-party security arrangement during elections and is hopeful stakeholders will support it.
The NPP also supported calls for a new and more credible register for subsequent elections.
The NPP, he said, suggested an electronic system “which is easier to manage, rather than manually registering before getting it into the electronic data base.”
The current voters register became a subject of huge controversy in the December elections, with the then opposition National Democratic Congress crying foul over what it said was a “bloated register.”
The Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, in comments ahead of the elections, also suggested that the register, given the number of registered voters, could not be realistic. But it blamed the political parties, particularly the NDC and NPP, who were accused of bussing minors and others who did not qualify, to get them to register.
The NDC has also given strong indications it will support an overhaul of the register.
