The New Patriotic Party is urging all interested in disputing its declaration of Nana Akufo-Addo as its presidential candidate to proceed to court.
Nana Ohene Ntow, General Secretary of the party told Joy News on Monday that all persons accusing the party of abusing the party’s constitution by failing to formerly acclaim his election do not know what they are talking about.
Several persons, including lawyers particularly from opposition National Democratic Congress, have accused the party of impropriety in declaring Akufo-Addo because the party failed to go through the process of acclamation.
Lawyers Mahama Ayariga and Mohammed Mumuni, both of the NDC, and journalist cum pollster, Ben Ephson, have all suggested that the party erred at its National Delegates Congress held at the University of Ghana at the weekend.
Nana Addo, who polled 1096 votes to win the election, failed however to obtain the constitutionally required 50 percent of valid votes cast plus one more vote to make him a clear winner.
The situation called for a run-off, however the man who gave Nana Addo the stiffest competition, Alan Kyerematen, conceded defeat and declined any interest in the run-off.
His announcement received thunderous cheers from the delegates and party officials alike, who were all dreading another bout of tortuous voting that was obviously going to worsen the long wait. The Electoral Commission then proceeded to declare Akufo-Addo winner of the polls and the party’s presidential candidate.
It is based on this process that those criticising the party are urging it to correct it before it becomes a problem.
Ben Ephson Jnr. had told Joy News on Sunday that it was difficult to understand how the EC could proceed to declare Akufo-Addo winner of a poll based on the word of an individual.
He said the NPP Constitution is fashioned along that of Ghana and said it was not clear to him how the declaration of a runner-up in any ballot could be interpreted as an acclamation.
Mahama Ayariga and Mohammed Mumuni also share his thoughts and suggested perhaps it would be prudent to test the legality of the process in the courts.
For Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni, for the interest of the NPP, none of its memebers may be interested in pursuing the matter in court, however, the matter may assume national dimension when Nana Addo finally files to contest the national elections.
But Ohene Ntow says the party has done no wrong owing to the rapturous applause that greeted Alan’s declaration and that of Akuffo-Addo’s investiture by the Electoral Commission.
Egbert Faible Jnr., Editor of the Ghanaian Observer and Gabby Asare Otchere Darko as well as Kweku Baako Jnr, Editor of the Crusading Guide, have all dissmissed the areguments that the party compromised its constitution in the process.
