There has been an anticlimax to the generally peaceful Fomena by-election as the vote-counting currently underway has recorded some violence.
A group of New Patriotic Party supporters said to be jubilating over provisional results which point to an electoral victory for their party marched on the National Democratic Congress constituency office hurling stones and other objects.
Their action was met with retaliation by NDC supporters until military officers deployed to keep the peace intervened. They are reported to have made an arrest or two.
Voting started peacefully at 7am and ended at 5pm.
Provisional results from 20 out of the 45 polling centres reported by Joy News correspondents point to a massive win for the NPP.
The NDC have vowed not to recognize the polls if ballots from two disputed centres; Dadwen and Kyekyewere are added.
They say the Dadwen and Kyekyewere polling stations should not be part of the Fomena constituency because it is part of Obuasi.
However the Electoral Commission has explained that the people of the two disputed areas have always voted under the Fomena Contstituency.
Nana Abu Bonsra, an architect, is contesting on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party, Madam Grace Ampofo, a retired teacher is on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress while Madam Augustina Kyei is standing in the name of the Democratic People's Party.
