The Northern Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Godwin Blawushie, says constant interference by opinion leaders and politicians in the region is unduly undermining their bid to enforce road traffic regulations.
The Northern Regional Correspondent, Hashmin Mohammed, reports that anytime the Unit picks up road traffic offenders, assemblymen and other influential people try to influence them to release these offenders.
Recent statistics show that the roads in the region is becoming very notorious for road accidents.
According to Hashmin, in the first quarter of 2013, 51 road accident cases resulting in 45 deaths were recorded in the Tamale Metropolis alone.
The Regional Police Commander said the worse offenders of these road traffic offenders are motor riders.
Superintendent Godwin Blawushie appealed to the media to assist the Unit to stamp out interference by these opinion leaders.
