Authorities at the Nsawkaw State Senior High School in the Tain District of the Brong Ahafo Region have warned they would be compelled to make new entrants of 2015/2016 academic year hold classes under trees.
The situation, they indicated, is due to the inadequate infrastructure in the school.
A four room semi detached bungalow built for teachers has been converted into a girl’s dormitory, science and administration building.
Speaking to Joy News, headmaster of the school, Kwame Ampofo Opoku said several correspondences to the district education directorate have yielded no results.
He said the school will need 15 classrooms for the entire school but there are only 12 classrooms available.
Three out of the remaining twelve classrooms are used for an ICT centre, Home Economics Lab and the other as a staff room, leaving only nine.
The nine classrooms left have been occupied by the second and final year students, making it impossible to get space for fresh students.
Due to the unavailability of accommodation for the students, Mr Opoku said the school has rented a facility to house male students for which huge sums of money are being paid.
According to him, female students with asthma get constant attacks because the dormitories are choked and most of them sleep on mattresses on the floor.
“There is very serious congestion; the space is so small that we cannot even erect the beds because when we do it will occupy a lot of space. Every now and then we have students who are asthmatic getting attacks and we have to rush them to the hospital.”
He pleaded with Government to come to their aid to ensure that a better learning environment is provided for the students.
