The nurse and the midwifery council have introduced the study of sign language as part of the curricula of nursing and midwifery training institutions in the country.
This is to help deal with the challenge faced by the deaf or the dumb when they visit health facilities when they are sick.
Five other courses including supply chain management, entrepreneurial skills, nursing and midwifery informatics, therapeutic communication and French language have also been introduced.
The introduction of these courses according to the Registrar of the Nurses and Midwifery Council of Ghana, Felix Nyante, is to equip the nurses and midwives with the requisite skills to handle diverse health related issues.

He made the announcement at the induction of 3,200 qualified nurses and midwives in Wa in the Upper West Region..
The inductees numbering over 3200 were drawn from nursing and midwifery institutions in the three northern regions who have completed their courses in 2015.
The induction ceremony was conducted by the chairperson of the 13th governing board of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana, May Osae Addae.
Upper West Regional Minister, Amin Amidu Sulemani commended the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana for the introduction of French and sign language as new courses for the training of nurses and midwives.

He appealed to the newly qualified nurses and midwives to be professional in the discharge of their duties.
‘‘Every part of Ghana your services are required and wherever they post you to you must be ready to go, live and work with the people. The rural areas need your service more than the urban centers,” Mr Sulemani said.
“You must desist from going to so call big men and women to help you not to go rural areas. This practice must stop’’, the minister cautioned.
