The Member of Parliament for Asikuma-Odobeng-Brakwa Constituency has attracted the wrath of the chiefs and people of the Mankessim traditional area for describing an incident at the Oguaa Fetu Afahye as ‘adegyangyan,’ to wit, "a useless thing."
What passed for that description by Mr P.C. Appiah Ofori was the failure of the Oguaa Manhene, Osabarima Kwesi Atta, to acknowledge the presence of the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Akufo-Addo, during a durbar at a festival celebration in Cape Coast at the weekend.
Nana Addo was also prevented from greeting the Oguaa Manhene. The NPP has described the incident as an insult to the party.
It would be recalled the entire entourage of the NPP, led by its flag bearer Nana Akufo-Addo, was prevented by Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, an aide to the President, from greeting the President.
PC Appiah Ofori had called as shameful how Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo should be invited to a function by the Oguaa Traditional Council and be subjected to such treatment by an NDC government operative whilst the traditional council distances itself from it.
He said the Omanhene sitting by and watching on whilst such an incident unfolded without the chief uttering a word is rather shameful.
But the chief of Mankessim-Gyedu, Nana Anyanful VI, who spoke on Asempa FM’s ‘Ekosii Sen’ programme says the MP's "adzegyangyan" description of the incident amounted to an insult of the Oguaa Traditional Area and that he must be made to face the full rigors of the traditional rules and customs.
The Mankessim-Gyedu chief says it was unfortunate for such words to have been coming from a Member of Parliament who should know better.
Quoting from the Chieftaincy Act 759 of 2008 section 63[c], any person who drags the name of the chieftaincy institution could even face a prison term or fine, and said the MP must be brought to book.
But responding to the concerns of the chiefs, the Asikuma-Odobeng-Brakwa MP defended his position and called the bluff of the chief. Although he said earlier told the press he would not apologise, he told Joy FM's Newsnight programme he was ready to render an apology to the Oguaa Manhene should he be asked to do so.
