A 29-year-old okada rider, identified as Kwasi Isaac, has reportedly died after being brutally assaulted by members of an illegal mining (galamsey) taskforce at Akyem Amenam near New Abirem in the Birim North Municipality of the Eastern Region.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident began with a confrontation after the taskforce allegedly knocked roasted corn from Isaac’s hand, triggering a heated exchange.
The situation escalated, and Isaac was allegedly physically assaulted by members of the taskforce. Despite his injuries, he managed to report the incident to the New Abirem Police Command.
However, reports indicate that members of the taskforce pursued and continued to beat him until he collapsed.

He was rushed to the Abirem Government Hospital, where he died the following day.
Police in the New Abirem District have since confirmed the arrest of one of the taskforce members to assist with investigations.
Isaac’s body has been deposited at the Eye N Eye Mortuary for autopsy and preservation.
The father of the deceased, Baba Moses, is calling on the government and relevant authorities to ensure justice is served and for his son’s body to be released for burial.
