The Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Bossman Asare, revealed that in the Okaikwei Central constituency, results were declared with 31 polling stations left uncounted, and officials admitted they were pressured into announcing the wrong winner prematurely.
According to Asare Bossman, the electoral officials said some people came around to force them to declare the results.
Speaking on JoyNews' AM Show on Tuesday, December 24, Mr Bossman explained that polling agents in Okaikwei Central reported being coerced into making the incomplete declaration.
He reiterated, “The report that came to us from our district office was that they didn’t follow proper procedure, they admitted that they were cajoled into declaring the wrong person the winner.”
He referred to footage aired by JoyNews, where an official involved in the declaration stated, “I am using 110 out of 141 polling station results, constituting 78%.”
Highlighting the proper protocol, he added, “Clearly, we don’t do that, you only make a declaration when it’s evident that, even if the remaining results are added to the second person’s tally, it would not change the outcome.”
"A similar situation reportedly occurred in the Ablekuma North constituency, which has 281 polling stations.
"Here, results from 219 polling stations were used to declare the outcome, leaving 62 stations unaccounted for, “when the report reached the commission, it was clear this was not proper collation,” Mr Bossman explained.
For both constituencies, the Electoral Commission had to nullify the initial declarations and return to the drawing board for a proper collation process, he concluded.
