Ace musician, Kwame Nsiah-Apau, known on stage as Okyeame Kwame has won the Reading Promoters Prize 2019.The others include; literary activist Abeku Adams and teacher of Awutu-Winton senior high school, Nelson Kwashie.The three were celebrated and honoured at the launch of the Accra International Book Festival 2019 held at the University of Ghana, Legon.The Reading Promoters Prize of the Accra International Book Festival was created to honour individuals and corporate institutions that are promoting reading and writing across Africa.The three emerged as winners out of the 154 individuals and institutions that were nominated for this year’s Prize.Okyeame Kwame, announced last year as the Reading Ambassador by CODE, has been successful in spearheading reading campaigns across Ghana.The hiplife artiste has found time out of his busy schedules to encourage Ghanaian children to take up reading through several projects.Frank Abeku Adams has also led a drive to stock libraries at the senior high and basic schools in Ekumfi, an initiative credited for the performance of students in the just ended examinations.The agric-business investor said he was moved to undertake the project because of the prevalence of child-trafficking in Ekumfi.“I took interest in the socio-economic development of the district because of some government documents I came across,” he had noted.On his part, Nelson Kwashie established a literacy project to help members of his community to appreciate the importance of reading and writing.His group, the Literacy Boost Project, has been successful in training many children about reading and writing.Presenting the awards last Saturday, Programmes Director of the Accra International Book Festival, Eugene Owusu Gyakari appealed to all Ghanaians to prioritise the well-being of their children.“The only lasting thing we can do for our children is to build them up as,” he told the gathering.The Reading Promoters Prize 2019 forms part of the six categories under the Accra International Prize.
