A shooting incident in the Awutu Senya East constituency of the Central Region has left one person dead and another critically injured after occupants of a V8 vehicle opened fire in Saturday's polls.
Information gathered indicates that both the deceased and the injured individual are believed to be members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to reports, the incident occurred after the NDC Parliamentary Candidate, Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor, allegedly declared herself the winner of the parliamentary elections.
The reports suggest that unknown assailants followed her and opened fire as they were heading home after observing the vote counting and collation exercise.
Ghana Police Service sources have since confirmed that the victims were supporters of Phillis Naa Koryor.
Speaking to Accra-based TV3, Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor recounted her visit to one of the collation centers, Iron City, after voting had concluded.
She alleged that she noticed a V8 vehicle belonging to the incumbent Member of Parliament, Mavis Hawa Koomson, parked near the center.
Madam Okunor claimed that the occupants of the vehicle included individuals she had identified who tried to take her life during the 2020 elections at Kasoa.
“They had followed me and shot one of my guys. One guy is dead and it is not peaceful. There is a dead body lying down, Hawa Koomson has killed someone. She wanted to take my life and kill someone,” she asserted.
When asked how she identified the vehicle and its occupants, she responded, “I know it because I know her car. I know the boys as well. This is not the first time the boys are coming to Kasoa. They have been to Kasoa before, they were there in 2020 and they were the first people who attacked me.”
Madam Okunor expressed deep concern for her safety and that of her family, stating, “I am not safe right now. My life and my family’s lives are in danger.”
She stated that she had reported the incident to the Ghana Police Service but claimed that no action had been taken so far.
The NDC parliamentary candidate confirmed that one person is deceased, while another is critically injured and fighting for their life.
That constituency is known to be a hotspot as it has recorded similar violent incidents during other electoral activities.
This will be the second fatality in Ghana's election after a similar shooting incident in the Tolon Constituency of the Northern Region left one person dead. The Police have since arrested four suspects in that incident.
