With the exception of Ashanti Region, the District Assembly elections scheduled for today in Brong Ahafo, Northern, Upper East and Volta Regions have all been postponed to tomorrow Thursday 30th December, 2010. This is because electoral materials did not reach their various destinations on time, but in the case of Ashanti Region, some electoral areas were voting while others were not. The EC had earlier announced that voters in Ashanti, Brong Ahafo, Northern, Upper East and Volta Regions were to cast their ballots on Wednesday. But the Brong Ahafo Regional Office of the Electoral Commission (EC) had to postpone the elections in the Region to Thursday since electoral materials meant for distribution across the region arrived just this morning. The Brong Ahafo Regional Director of Elections, Mr. Gyabaah explains that the dispatching of the electoral materials could not be done on time considering the distances involved, in travelling from one area to another in the Region. Mr. Gyabaah gave the assurance that all the materials for the elections would be dispatched by close of Wednesday, so the polls would be best enhanced if slated for tomorrow. According to Odeneho Appiah of Dinpa FM in Sunyani all was set for the elections to take place in some areas in the Region till a message came from the EC that the elections in the Brong Ahafo Region be scheduled to Thursday December 30. The situation in the Upper East Region was similar. Albert Sore of Radio A One in Bolgatanga also told Asempa News that the polls have been scheduled to be held tomorrow. According to him, the Upper East Regional Electoral Commission officers explained to the media that all the electoral materials had not yet arrived in the Region for the elections to be held on Wednesday as scheduled. The reporter added that the EC had however assured the electorates that the materials would be ready for the elections on Thursday. The Northern Regional office of the EC also postponed the Assembly elections following the inability of the EC to make delivery of electoral materials to the region on scheduled. According to McDonald Tui, a reporter with Diamond FM, a local Radio station in Tamale, the postponement which was communicated to the electorate only Tuesday evening, is likely to create voter apathy. Ohemeng Tawiah of Nhyira FM in Kumasi reports that elections only took place in some parts of the Region whiles elections in other areas have been postponed to Thursday. According to him, elections are being conducted in Abrepo and its surroundings with reports of voter apathy due to low publicity. However in areas as Kwadaso, Nhyiaeso and Atwima Nwabiagya polls could not be conducted due to the absence of electoral materials. Elections in all these areas would be held on Thursday.
