Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya and former Energy Minister, Mike Oquaye, has declared that the NPP government will continue to promote moral values and discipline in the country.
He noted that the moral fabric of the Ghanaian society was severely destroyed years ago under the PNDC when men and women were stripped naked and whipped in public, adding that a lot of time would be needed to repair the damage caused by the military regime.
Speaking at a function organised by the S.B. Asore Centre of Pastoral Excellence to deliberate on "The role of a Christian in politics", Oquaye stated that a nation could only please God if its leaders proved the determination to enforce discipline and promote moral values among the people.
According to him, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, NPP Flag bearer whom he (Oquaye) said would definitely take over from President Kufuor next year, will continue to make prostitution, abortion, lesbianism and homosexuality illegal acts that will attract severe punishments.
Turning to human rights issues, he cited the Preventive Detention Act under Article 55 of the First Republican Constitution as one of the bad laws that infringed on people's rights in Ghana.
He explained that the law, which allowed people to be detained for 5 years, was subsequently amended to get people detained for 10 years, a situation which he claimed destroyed the peaceful atmosphere in the country then.
Relating Ghana to ancient Israel, the MP noted that any ruler that feared God in the days of old received enormous blessings and prosperity, stating that Ghana would not have been a prosperous and peaceful nation if President Kufuor and his Ministers had not been God fearing leaders.
Mike Ocquaye, who is a reverend minister, charged Christians to be involved in political affairs with the fear of God.
James Kofi Ahovi, a participant at the function stated, "We knew Nana Addo to be a politician but he has proven to us that he is a real Christian spearheading national development through politics".
