A project analyst and lead trainer for the Cambridge Centre of Excellence has called on producers of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) to separate boys’ schools from girls’ schools in subsequent editions.

He argues it is unfair for girls to participate in a competition that has a large male dominance.

“For a competition that focuses on science and mathematics, the masculine gender will always have the advantage over their female counterpart,” Kwame Ahinkorah said.

According to him, the male brain has a greater aptitude towards the more scientific-mathematical content while females tend to have greater linguistic and emotional intelligence.

Mr Ahinkorah noted that in any competition where the genders do not have equal strength or aptitude, the competitions are separated.

“In a quest to promote the study of science and maths among females, pitching them against teams with a biological advantage will defeat the motive,” he observed.

The National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) is an annual competition which seeks to promote the study of science and mathematics in senior high schools across the country.

So far, since its inception in 1993, a total of 26 competitions have been held. 24 of those competitions have been won by an all-male school whiles two have been won by a mixed school.

No girl school has ever won in the competition.
