Renowned actor and producer, Oscar Provencal, widely known as Inspector Bediako, has revealed the reason why he accepted to play the role.
In an interview on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning on Wednesday, he noted that he did it out of his passion for acting and not for fame. But little did he know it would become a household name in Ghana.
“In those days, we loved the craft with passion for what we were doing. I never thought of stardom. Stardom didn’t occur to me. I didn’t do it because I wanted to be a star. I did it because I love theatre, and that was my passion,” he told the host, Roselyn Felli.
According to him, he never knew the role he played captured people’s hearts and attention, making him gain a lot of recognition. The actor also recounted how the role has impacted a lot of lives as it inspired some people to enrol in the security service.
“I was on a film production last week, and we were shooting at a police station, and as we entered to start, one of the women came up to me and said that because of me, she became a policewoman. That humbled me, but that was not the first time someone said that to me,” Mr. Provencal said.
The testimonies changed his perspective towards the profession. It became an inspiration for him to passionately continue with his course and was featured in other movies, believing that it would contribute positively to people’s lives.
Unfortunately, Mr. Provencal thinks that prospective actors are unaware of their social impact. As a result, their negative-motivated actions and content pose threats to people's lives. This, he says, saddens him.
Despite this, he encouraged the sector's legendary and relevant players to inspire youngsters to trade a different path than the current generation in order to improve the profession.
‘Inspector Bediako’ is a Ghanaian TV series created by Kojo Yankah and launched in Accra on March 24, 1993. It gave the country a unique feel of black excellence.
The 30-minute episodes featured the likes of Oscar Provencal as the lead actor, Akosua Abdallah, Gloria Nsia Ababio (Dela), Martin Owusu (Bentle), and Teiko.
Speaking on the Prime Morning Show, Mr. Provencal acknowledged the creator and the crew for trusting in his craft and granting him the opportunity to play the role. He said they are unsung heroes that need to be paid homage to.
