Conflict has again reared its ugly head in the Osu Traditional Area following allegations that a faction in the chieftaincy dispute had ‘stolen’ the war god of the Kinkawe Division and taken it to an unknown destination. The event created a chaotic situation in the community last Saturday, with angry youth vandalising property in one of the royal houses. The police, however, reacted swiftly by firing tear gas to disperse the mob and succeeded in arresting six people suspected to be involved in the violence. The suspects have been granted bail pending further investigations. Confirming the story to the Daily Graphic, the Public Relations Officer of the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, Chief Inspector Kwaku Dompreh, said the disturbances were the result of the prevailing chieftaincy rivalry in the area. He said prior to the latest events, the Nii Nortey Owuo III faction had written to the police to seek permission to perform the rituals to herald the Dade Festival. He said based on intelligence report, the police wrote back to Nii Owuo not to perform any rites in the public, since that could fuel the already tense situation in the area. Chief Inspector Dompreh said the police later had information that the people had defied the order of the police and that had led to a breach of the peace. He said in the process, some of the youth went on rampage and destroyed some property. He said a team of police personnel was sent to the area to protect lives and property and restore calm, resulting in the arrest of the six people. The community was calm when this reporter visited the community. A spokesman for the Asafo Company said the war god, otherwise known as ‘Dade’, had been brought out to be carried around the town and finally to the grounds where the last rituals were to be performed. But that infuriated some of the elders and the youth in the town who decided to disrupt the programme and that degenerated into chaos and the attack on the house. Source: Daily Graphic/Ghana
