Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has intervened in the standoff between Traders at the Kejetia Terminal and the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) over plans by the assembly to build a new market.

The two are currently in court over the decision by the KMA to relocate the traders from the terminal.

The traders sued the KMA and the Kumasi Mayor, Kojo Bonsu, for barricading the entrance to the Kejetia bus terminal, thus preventing them from trading there.

In a bid to bring an end to the strife between the Assembly and the Kejetia Traders, the Asanteman Council has tasked the KMA to produce a guarantee that all traders will have a space in the new market when work is completed.

The Council also asked the KMA to heed a request by the Traders to improve conditions at their temporary location.

A representative of the KMA, who was at the mediation meeting, promised the end of the month to meet the conditions.

The joint Kejetia and Kumasi Central Market redevelopment project is expected to be completed in two years.

The ultra-modern project is estimated to cost government about $298 million.

The market, which will be the first of its kind in the West African sub-region, would also serve neighbouring countries.
