Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has announced the construction of two state of the art Technical, Vocational Education and Training centers in each of the sixteen regions.
Nine of these centers being constructed under phase one of the project, will comprise modern training infrastructure, laboratories and workshops with cutting edge training tools, hostels, among others.
Dr. Bawumia said the project is to consolidate the gains made in enhancing quality, expand access and increase funding for TVET in Ghana.
The move, he explained, is to make TVET education aspirational for every Ghanaian.
Parliament in 2020, approved a concessional loan of 158.9 million Euros to finance the construction of phase one of the establishment of 32 state-of-the-art TVET centers.
The 9 centers being constructed, are located at Abrankese, Akyem Awisa and Boako in Ashanti, Eastern and Western North regions.
The rest are to be hosted in; Salaga, Dambai, Kenyasi, Patuda Guabuliga and Tolibri across six regions respectively.
Planet One Educational Group, a Dubai-based entity, is the contractor.
Speaking at a commemorative sod cutting event for One TVET Center of Excellence and 8 others at Abrankese in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti region, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia reiterated government's quest to make TVET education the toast of the youth.
“Today in the world of work, it is skills that matter; it is not certificates anymore. It’s about skills.
In relation to this, the NPP government over the last 5-years, has worked to improve on governance by establishing the Commission on TVET and the Ghana TVET Service through the passing of ACT 1023 and ACT 1049 respectively, to enhance quality, expand access and increase funding for TVET,” he added.
The Vice President noted government's intention to make Ghana a world class skills development center through systematic programmes geared towards improving TVET education in Ghana.
“The President’s goal is to make Ghana a world class center for skills development and a leading country in technical and vocational education training delivery in Africa and also make skills acquisition aspirational for all Ghanaians.”
He continued, “Our government’s commitment to transforming the TVET landscape is unmatched by any other government.”
Education Minister, Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum commended government for improving education infrastructure in the area.
“Bosomtwe is grateful to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo; Bosomtwe is grateful to the Vice President of the Republic.
When Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo took office, there were only three senior high schools in Bosomtwe. Now we have 8. He has also given us our first public tertiary institution,” he said.
