The Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan S. Suhuyini, says that the problems faced by the country are mostly caused by the leaders in government, rather than the 1992 Constitution.
In an interview on JoyNews' Newsfile on Saturday, Mr Suhuyini said although some amendments ought to be made to the Constitution, he is of the view that the country's problems are not entirely due to the provisions of the Constitution.
“I agree that there are substantial issues in our Constitution that need to be looked at. But I am not one that is quick to suggest that almost all our problems lie with the Constitution.
“I think to a very large extent, that it lies with the individuals that we put in charge of implementing provisions that are outlined in the Constitution,” he told Samson Lardy Anyenini.
According to the Deputy Ranking Member on the Lands and Forestry Committee, even if constitutional reforms are made, the nation would continue to suffer.
This, he explained, Is because the nation's future depends on how its chosen leaders interprete and carry out the dictates of the Constitution.
Therefore, he stressed that should the citizens elect leaders who do not rightfully implement the laws of the land, an amended constitution would be of no use.
As a result, Mr. Suhuyini advised Ghanaians to be vigilant when selecting candidates for public service.
