More than 1000 locally manufactured fire arms and assault rifles were destroyed, Saturday at Trade Fair Centre here in Accra.

This was part of activities to mark the UN International Day for destruction of weapons.

The arms were seized in 2015 by the various security agencies.

According to Minister for Interior, Prosper Bani, government is instituting mechanisms to strengthen co-ordination among the agencies in the fight against proliferation of arms.

"The government through the security agencies has adopted a multifaceted approach to address the numerous posed by the uncontrolled use of small arms.

These measures include the adoption of effective means to settle disputes in order to maintain peace and stability; the control of the sources of the proliferation of weapons in order to break the chain of supply; the tightening of domestic controls in order to prevent small arms from flowing into illegal hands; the strengthening of the capacity of the small arms commission and other relevant state institution..." he chronicled.

Mr. Bani added the Small Arms Commission is working with stakeholders to reduce the number of illegal weapons in circulation ahead of the November elections.

"Even though Ghana has not experienced any major election conflict since the return to multi-party democracy we cannot be complacent, neither can we afford to take our eyes off the ball," he said.
