With the rainy season looming, residents of Pankrono-Atimatim in the Old Tafo Constituency of the Ashanti region, are worried about the condition of one of the only two major roads linking the town with Pankrono West, Atimatim and the surrounding environs.
The road’s nearness to the Kumasi Business Centre, Adum, and Old Tafo markets makes it the preferred choice for the many traders including commercial drivers and pedestrians who engage in business in the area.
After many months of construction, the finished road has no markings for runoff water, which has left parts of it already eroded less than a few months after it was handed over to the authorities.
This has created difficulties for commuters and residents alike especially after every heavy downpour as a result of flooding.
Drivers and commuters have had to revert to using the Pankrono-Adabraka road, opposite the Pankrono market which is still under construction and a long way off from the central business district thus resulting in delays.
According to residents who spoke with Joy News Television, they are living in constant fear of flooding especially as the rainy season approaches.
Their greatest fear is losing the lives of their children in particular, who play around the flooded area.
Assembly Member for the area, Samuel Okoso complained about the poor road network in the area and appealed to the appropriate authorities to help tar the road to avoid any further flooding.
Residents subsequently acknowledged getting in touch with Urban Roads and the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), who are intervening to construct the eroded portions of the road as well as the bridge and expressed their gratitude for that.
