The Acting Eastern Regional Director of Education, Ms. Felicia Duku has urged parents to educate their handicapped children since they had the ability to perform as other children.
She said such children rather needed exposure to help them develop their talents and potential because they were already disadvantaged.
Ms. Duku made the remarks at awards ceremony to climax the 50th anniversary of the Regional Library at Koforidua, when the Unit School of the Deaf received awards for their art works.
As part of the 50th anniversary, the Regional Library organized a series of competitions for schools in the municipality and the unit School for the Deaf was the only handicapped school that took part in the competition.
Ms Duku thanked the Library Board for their contribution towards quality education in the area and urged students to take advantage of the library to read and acquire knowledge for themselves.
She told the students that without the habit of reading, academic laurels could not be achieved and they could end up becoming educated illiterate.
The Deputy Director of the Ghana Library Board, Mr Adjei Appenteng, commended the New Juaben Municipal Assembly for single handedly constructing a 3.5 billion cedi library complex.
In his welcoming address, the Regional Director of the Library Board, Oscar Zandoh, said the regional library was opened in 1957, hence the quiz competition to commemorate the anniversary.
He said apart from providing books for teaching, research and leisure, the regional library also support the educational institutions by providing complementary reading materials to their school libraries.
Mr Zandoh said the old regional library had outlived its usefulness,
since it could no longer accommodate people who visit the place and thanked the assembly for the construction of a new library.
He thanked the sponsors of the awards for the program and appealed for more of such support to sustain the library.
