Parliament will on Wednesday consider the report of the Legal and Constitutional Committee asking it to amend Article 112 of the 1992 Constitution.
When passed by two-third majority vote of Members of Parliament (MPs), it will enable the Electoral Commission (EC) hold the general elections in November.
The bill to change the election date from December to November will require 21 days to mature. It has generated a lot of controversy in the country with some persons suggesting the old date be maintained because the EC appears unprepared for the general election.
The EC has also hinted Parliament’s Legal and Constitutional Committee it is ready to hold the election in November when given the opportunity.
It also came out that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs said they will torpedo the amendment process for the old date to be maintained.
Speaking to Joynews, Chairman of the Committee, Magnus Amoatey, said they have done their work and have submitted their report to the leadership of the House.
According to him, the acceptance or lack thereof of the bill will be dependent on the leadership of the Parliament.
“I have reported and I have recommended that the Bill be passed. I think we have what we call the leadership of the House now it is on their plate to ensure that the Bill is passed,” he said.
He disclosed all the outstanding issues regarding the EC’s preparation have been resolved.
“Our fears have been allayed by the Electoral Commission itself and the assurance from the Ministry of Finance that it has the necessary resources for the conduct of the elections,” he said, adding, the leadership of Parliament has to lobby the NPP MPs to guarantee an overwhelming support for the bill.
