Parliament today resumed sitting, recalled from recess by the Speaker to consider outstanding business of the house.
Deputy Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu told Joy FM the agenda for the extraordinary meeting is a tall one and certainly includes the much-debated intention of government to offload 70 percent shares in Ghana Telecom to Vodafone.
He told Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah on the Super Morning Show that other motions on the table include a $1 billion facility to complete the dualization of the Kumasi – Accra road and the Kumasi – Tamale road, the Takoradi – Elubo road among others. The meeting will also look at government’s plan to purchase 300 buses to augment public transport fleet, and then a $375 million facility for the expansion of electricity to the countryside.
He expects the meeting to last until about Thursday.
Meanwhile groups of people opposed to the GT sale to Vodafone, have gathered at Parliament House to press home their calls for the abrogation of the deal. The groups include the Committee for Joint Action, the Integrated Social Development Center (ISODEC, the Socialist Forum, other pressure groups and known politicians.
National Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, per a statement issued by his office at the weekend, indicated he would be joining the protestors to petition Parliament not to approve the sale agreement.
Joy News correspondent, Cyrus DeGraft Johnson, reporting from Parliament House, said the expected debate of the GT-Vodafone deal may not begin today following amendments to the original provisions in the Sale and Purchase Agreement. The amendments have necessitated a review of the package by Parliament’s Finance and Communications Committee before a general debate by the House.
At the Ghana Telecom headquarters, some workers are continuing with what they claim is a nationwide demonstration in support of the sale deal, arguing that it is the only way to reposition the company and save it from imminent collapse.
