Parliament has resumed sittings for the second session of the 9th Parliament, with more than 600 bills and parliamentary questions carried over from 2025 awaiting consideration.
The backlog was disclosed by the leadership of the House during a media engagement ahead of the resumption on Monday afternoon.
Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga acknowledged the volume of pending business, noting that Parliament faces an intensive legislative schedule in the weeks ahead.
He also announced that the House is preparing to host President John Dramani Mahama, who is expected to deliver his second State of the Nation Address during the session.
As part of the government’s legislative agenda, Mr Ayariga revealed plans to introduce and pass a bill to rename the Kotoka International Airport as Accra International Airport.
The proposed change, he said, forms part of broader policy decisions the government intends to pursue during the current sitting.
Meanwhile, Parliament is yet to receive a report on the disturbances that occurred during vetting proceedings in 2025. Leadership indicated that the House will be duly informed once the report is finalised.
It may be recalled that disorder broke out during a sitting of Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, 31 January 2025, destroying tables and microphones.
The Minority caucus has also resumed participation in parliamentary business, with expectations of robust debate and scrutiny of government proposals throughout the session.
