The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) faces intense scrutiny today before Parliament's Energy Committee over worsening power outages and the disappearance of 23 containers holding critical electrical equipment valued at GH₵12 million.
The missing containers scandal, recent power outages and mounting debts are expected to be addressed after the Energy Minister, John Jinapor, painted a dark story of the sector.
The Volta River Authority (VRA) and Bui Power Authority are also expected to appear before the committee session, taking place at the Peduase Valley Resort in the Eastern Region.
JoyNews’ Parliamentary Affairs Correspondent Kwaku Asante explained that the ECG is expected to provide answers on intermittent blackouts affecting customers in several parts of the country.
He explains that debt and operational efficiency will be addressed, with recent concerns about the privatisation of distribution and revenue collection forming part of the agenda for the day.
At the committee hearing, the Volta River Authority (VRA) is also expected to provide explanations to the Akosombo Dam spillages in 2023 that displaced over 35,000 people across 300 communities in the Volta and Eastern Regions.
The Bui Power Authority is also scheduled to provide plans and other recommendations on its 5-year expansion vision targeting 400MW additional capacity by 2028 through solar-hybrid systems.
