A heavy downpour last night in Accra is said to have caused some destruction in some parts of the capital.
The full extent of the destruction is not yet known. But the heavy downpour is the second for this month.
Some residents of Redco Flats at Madina called into Joy FM to report extensive flooding in their area.
They said the situation has been made worse by some squatters there.
One of the residents of Redco Flats told Joy News that after about two hours of rain, water levels in his home had reached the waste level forcing him and members of his household to move upstairs to safety.
“At the west point the water level was above the windscreen level of my 4x4 vehicle, we had three 4x4 vehicles parked outside and they were all almost completely submerged,” he said.
The victim added that other homes in the area were not spared the fury of the floods.
At the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, a young man whose name was given as Barwuah Abubakar was trapped to death and residents blame his death on the floods that forced the nearby Odaw River to overrun its banks.
Some petty traders at the place told Myjoyonline.com the man was confirmed dead when they sent him to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. The body has since been deposited at the morgue for autopsy.
The people, mainly traders, said the flood situation in the area has worsened, blaming a construction work on the Graphic Road, which the contractor has dumped excavated sand in the river hindering free flow of the river.
The heavy downpour delayed business at the Pedestrian Shopping Mall and the opening of small shops along the Odaw River.
