Passengers on three vehicles escaped unhurt when an articulated truck load of teak logs retreated while climbing the Abrepo Junction hill in Kumasi in what appeared to be a horrible accident on Thursday evening. It was the ingenuity of the driver’s mate of the articulated truck whose shout urging passengers on board other vehicles to run to safety that ensured no casualty was recorded. A Toyota Hiace mini bus and an Opel Astra taxi cab that fell victims of the horrible accident were ran over by the truck, mangling them beyond repairs. A third one, a Hyundai Wagon 4 wheel drive car was also smashed. The three vehicles with registration AW 6379 W, AS 1983 W and GW 8875 R being the mini bus, taxi and the Hyundai Wagon vehicles together with the articulated truck and its containers forced the closure of the Abrepo Junction section of the Abrepo Junction-Barekese road. Down the memory lane, seven people died on the spot when a caterpillar rammed an urvan mini van at the same spot. The long shaft of the articulated truck allegedly broke down while the driver was in the middle of the hill, forcing the driver to lose control in the process. Sensing danger, the driver’s mate quickly alighted and shouted to all potential victims to run to safety. Passengers in a haste run while some drivers drove their vehicles to safety but the three were unlucky as they could not escaped. Motorists have no option than to endure the hardship posed by the horrible accident. But one thing was clear on the minds of the large crowd that trooped to the scene, heaping praises on the driver’s mate who saved many lives. But the Suame Police MTTU, led by ASP Charity Amankwa lived up to expectations thereby attracting praise and commendation of the public as they managed traffic and barricaded the scene, preventing more vehicles from crushing into the accident. It took the intervention of police and the National Road Safety Commission to clear traffic on Friday.
