The family of a commercial driver at Suhum in the Eastern Region are charging members of a joint police/military anti-armed robbery patrol team with his death.The family of the late George Bekoe, an urvan bus driver, says his death last Friday was the direct result of severe beatings he received at the hands of members of the team, (five policemen and four soldiers) who accused him of reckless driving.The Police Administration in Accra says it is investigating the matter, however, DSP Kwasi Ofori, Acting Director in charge of Public Relations, told Joy News that a preliminary police homicide squad investigation absolves members of the team from any wrong doing, but a private inquest has been requested to establish the real cause of Bekoe’s death.According to the family spokesman, Yaw Pobee, the nine security personnel chased and arrested Bekoe between 7pm and 8pm for allegedly overtaking three vehicles, including their own rather recklessly, and pounded him with the butts and muzzles of their guns until he became weak, whereupon they took him to the Suhum police station to charge him. However the duty officer asked them to proceed with him to the Suhum Government Hospital since he was unconscious, and he was pronounced dead on arrival.The family is therefore demanding justice for their late kin.But DSP Kwasi Ofori at the Police Headquarters told Joy News Dzifa Bampoh that information available to him only suggests that upon his arrest after Bekoe had initially ignored signals to stop and given a hot chase because attempted to escape, the patrol team only sent him to the Suhum police station where he was placed in custody.He later complained of sickness and was admitted to the Suhum Hospital where he died later, and the homicide squad report suggests there were no signs of physical assault.DSP Kwasi Ofori however, would not comment on the whereabouts of the men accused of the crime, preferring that a private pathologists inquest be conducted for a more scientific establishment of the cause of death.
