Mr P.C. Appiah Ofori, Member of Parliament for Asikuma Odobeng-Brakwa has petitioned President Mills against assenting to the Petroleum Revenue Management Act. According to the MP, who was not present when the bill was passed into an Act, there are some serious loopholes in the Act that need to be corrected before the president gives his assent. Joy News’ parliamentary correspondent Sammy Darko says Mr Appiah Ofori craved the indulgence of the House to enable him lay a motion to effect changes in the Act. He is seeking to amend the law for a certain amount of the oil revenues to be used to procure equipment for the Ghana Navy to enable them protect Ghana’s territorial waters and against smuggling of crude oil. Parliament on Wednesday, March 02, 2011 passed the Petroleum Revenue Management Bill 2010 into an Act, but the president must append his signature for it to become law. The Act would prescribe guidelines as to how revenues from the oil find will be used. Mr Appiah told the House that he had gone to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for some drugs only to return to find the bill passed in his absence without a chance to move a motion he had tabled before parliament. He stressed that, having lived in oil-rich Nigeria before, he knows the consequences of not fully supporting the navy to counter activities of smugglers. Whilst the Minority supported the MP's request, Sammy Darko says, the Majority, on the other hand, vehemently opposed the call. Story by Isaac Essel/Myjoyonine.com/Ghana
