The Chairman of the National Peace Council, Rev. Emmanuel Kofi Fianu, has underscored the need for government support to strengthen the Council’s human resource capacity and improve staff welfare.

He made the appeal during a meeting with President John Dramani Mahama in Accra on Wednesday, December 10.

Rev. Fianu explained that the Council is currently operating with only 83 permanent staff nationwide, a number he said is inadequate for its workload.

According to him, the institution requires at least 400 personnel to effectively oversee regional activities and handle the more than 300 active conflict-related cases across the country.

He further expressed concern about the persistent rate of staff attrition, noting that many employees leave due to low remuneration and limited allowances.

This, he stressed, hampers the Council’s ability to retain experienced personnel and maintain continuity in peacebuilding efforts.

Rev. Fianu added that outstanding allowances owed to the previous board, particularly for the third and fourth quarters of 2024, remain unpaid.

,He described the current seating allowances for board members as insufficient considering the level of commitment and responsibility associated with their roles.

The Chairman reaffirmed the Peace Council’s dedication to its mandate but emphasised that improved staffing levels and adequate compensation are essential to sustaining its work and enhancing national peace and stability.
