JoyNews, in partnership with the German Embassy, has successfully launched the maiden edition of Climate Talks, a new community-driven initiative aimed at finding practical, sustainable solutions to Ghana’s climate challenges.
The event took place on Thursday, May 15, at the James Town Methodist Church in Accra.

The dialogue brought together climate advocates, innovators, policymakers, and residents of the coastal community to address one of Ghana’s most pressing environmental and public health issues: clean cooking.
With over 70 per cent of households in urban and peri-urban areas still relying on charcoal and firewood, participants discussed how this dependence contributes not only to environmental degradation but also to severe health consequences.

Currently, household air pollution is responsible for an estimated 16,000 premature deaths in Ghana each year, 8,500 in urban areas and 7,600 in rural communities. The Climate Talks provided a platform for stakeholders to explore clean energy alternatives that could drastically reduce these figures and improve the quality of life for millions.

The event also spotlighted Ghana’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Climate Change Agenda 2030, with a specific focus on clean cooking practices and environmentally friendly technologies.

Emphasis was placed on empowering communities, especially women and children, who are disproportionately affected by indoor air pollution, with healthier, safer, and more sustainable cooking solutions.

JoyNews and the German Embassy plan to expand the Climate Talks series to other communities across the country, continuing the push for practical and inclusive climate action that addresses local realities and promotes long-term environmental resilience.
