European football chief Michel Platini wants FIFA to look again at its nationality rule switch in a proposal that could have serious consequences for African nations.
The Frenchman is proposing that players are made to commit to an international career when they are 18 rather than allow them to make the switch later on.
Players can still switch their international allegiance to another if they have ties, granted they have not played a competitive senior game.
Many African countries have benefited from the practice, with Ghana capping Kevin-Prince Boateng and Quincy Owusu-Abeyie when they had all appeared for the junior teams of Germany and Holland respectively.
They both made the switch in their early 20s, but if Platini had his way, that will not happen again.
There is also a strong desire for Ghana to cap Emmanuel Frimpong, the 19-year-old Arsenal midfielder who has been called up to the England U-21 team, despite declaring in the past he is keen on representing Ghana.
He said: “I believe you need to ask a player at 18, when he becomes an adult, which nationality he is rather than wait for a senior competitive game. People are bargaining over them.”
