The People’s National Convention is not made up old men and women, presidential candidate of the party for Election 2008, Dr Edward Mahama, has said. He is reacting to what he says has been “the perception out there” that the party’s leadership and grassroots supporters are old persons who have little energies to drive the fortunes of the party. The PNC leader who was speaking to Citi FM, stressed the party has a neat pack of the youngest leaders whose contribution to the PNC has been invaluable. “We had the youngest executive,” he stated. Dr Mahama cited the party’s youth organiser Emmanuel Wilson and General Secretary Bernard Mornah, adding, that their presence in the PNC’s leadership must portray a very youthful image of the party. Dr Mahama rebutted claims that the abysmal performance of the PNC in the last election was because it was not “attractive” to the electorate. “I think I did well enough to have won the elections but Ghanaians are always looking for a party that is big,” he stated. The medical doctor blamed certain internal struggles in the party for the PNC’s poor showing in the 2008 ballot. He held the assertion that such struggles demonstrated that the party upheld the tenets of democracy, stressing, “Ghanaians did not see it that way.” He however hinted that the hopes of the leadership and grassroots support of the PNC are still alive. The PNC secured a marginal 0.87 percent of votes in the 2008 elections, a drop from its 2002 performance of 1.12 percent. Contract with the NDC Dr Edward Mahama has hinted that the PNC is still awaiting the ruling NDC to fulfil its part of a contract it signed with PNC. “We have an understanding with the NDC and we’re waiting for them to implement their part of it,” he said. Whilst refraining from disclosing the details of this “understanding,” Dr Mahama stressed PNC’s support for the NDC in Parliament had been enormous. The PNC joined the Majority in the election of the Speaker Mrs Bamford-Addo. It is not likely what opportunities the ruling party has for the PNC but sources close to the NDC believe certain high-profile positions may be up for grabs for the coconut fraternity.
