The People’s National Party (PNP) has petitioned the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate what it describes as an “unprecedented” budgetary allocation of Gh₵78 million to the office of Government Communication led by the minister, Felix Ofosu Kwakye.
In a petition addressed to EOCO’s Executive Director, Mr Raymond Acher, on Monday, September 8, the PNP leadership argued that the allocation, captured in the 2025 national budget, raises questions of transparency, accountability, and prudent use of public resources.
The party noted that the office in question does not hold the status of a ministry, yet has been granted funds far in excess of what was previously allocated to the Ministry of Information, which had six agencies under it.
According to the petition, Mr Ofosu Kwakye’s office currently oversees three agencies. The PNP is thus seeking clarity on which agencies these are, how they were reassigned, and their operational budgets before the reorganisation.
The party alleged that part of the funds may be channelled to selected media houses, civil society organisations, and influential individuals in ways that could advance the ruling National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) political agenda.
The PNP emphasised that its request is solely aimed at ensuring accountability in public financial management.
“In a time of economic hardship, with youth unemployment, poor infrastructure, and under-resourced public institutions, such opaque allocations must be fully scrutinised,” the petition read.
Founder and Leader of the party, Janet Asana Nabla, urged EOCO to demand a detailed financial breakdown of the Gh₵78 million, verify the agencies under the minister’s oversight, and publish its findings to restore public trust.
“We voted for leaders to serve Ghana, not to enrich themselves or entrench political control through questionable funding strategies,” the petition noted.
