Poem of the Week: Mamagah

They whispered words of lies in their ears

And their thoughts were tickled

They licked lies

As if it was an alewa toffee

But she was not afraid of creating her own image

Her name was Mamagah

She was filled dreams

And weighty with passion

The realities that embrace existence

Came on her like a raging storm

Yet she spoke words of hope to her degrading body

Even though her mind, soul and spirit has been intoxicated with lies

Her hair has been twisted

But not her sanity and ability to reason

So she confronted every word of negativity

With the weapon of positivity

And with possibility she scribbled her own story

You see, in life

If you don’t write your own story

The world will write it for you

So every lie she heard

And every lie told in her face

With a new eye and a clean slate

She was not counted late

To have scripted her own story

She was only seventeen

When that fine looking young man fed her with lies

With those sweet sugar coated words

He swept her off her feet

But he made vain promises to her

He only wanted to get into her pants

Mamagah was too naive to have realised it

A promising student of Roman Girls Junior High

Now a waakye seller with a baby at her back

Rejected by family

Second-hand to the man that professed love to her

At that tender age of seventeen

The reality of life embraced her

And despair slapped her so hard in the face

Her world only featured in her dreams

Her future goals painted in the blue skies

Her life became a dirge

A dirge sung by her haters

Not her lovers

But the missionaries did not have pity on her

Even though they preached the message of a second chance

Instead, they dragged her buttocks on the floor

Shouting she is a bad example to her peers

That was the last time she stepped into the classroom

But you see

The only way to break through the pains and horrors of today

Is to look at the world with a new eye

An eye of possibility

So when you fall

Don’t fall with your face on the ground

Fall with your back on the ground

With your face facing heaven

That is the only way to gain strength to rise again

Mamagah was not raped

She made a petite mistake of opening her legs

for a man who was not worthy of her love

And now she must suffer the pain of rejection

The stress of raising a child without a father

One of moment of ecstasy

Yes! One moment of pleasure

Took away her pride and treasure

One moment of ecstasy

Yes! One moment of pleasure

Can either leave you with a gory experience

Or a lifelong treasure

It depends on what lens you’re wearing

Mamagah was insulted

Rejected

And rated a spoilt little girl

A disgrace to society

Is what they called her

But she gathered a think skin

Time, they say is the best story teller

Today, she is hailed for her heroism

For not killing an innocent baby

For raising a child

For giving that innocent child a university education

Even though she cannot properly write her name

She is now quoted as reference

Every where the subject is raised

There is nothing like a mistake

Allow that baby to grow of inside you

Nourish it with love, kind words and prayers

For one day, you will look back and bless God

So kill abortion from your mind

To all those brave women who never conceded the idea of abortion

To all those brave women who took the challenge of raising a child without a father

To all those brave women who gave innocent babies the chance to see the world

First to my mother and to you making that decision today

The poem tells the story of a young girl who became pregnant at the age of 17 but didn't conceive the idea of an abortion. She went through the painful stress of life to see the child through school.

It is also a poem that appreciates single mothers and seeks to discourage young women from engaging in abortion.
