Police in Accra have arrested an unlicensed telecom operator said to be involved in the illegal termination of international calls.
The suspect whose name has been withheld was arrested by the joint anti-fraud task force of the National Communications Authority (NCA).
He is accused of diverting inbound international telephone calls to make them appear as local calls.
The practice described as illegal by the NCA was the main reason why government introduced the international gateway monitoring mechanism.
Illegal termination of international call traffic is said to be costing the government close to a hundred million dollars a month in lost tax revenue.
A source at the NCA tells Joy news, the suspect is currently in police custody whilst investigations continue.
